Purchase a pup

When you plan to purchase a Bordeaux Dog, it is wise that you realize what you are starting to do well in advance. The Bordeaux Dog is known as a friendly dog that needs consistent education. Raising a Bordeaux Dog puppy takes a lot of time and energy, especially the first year you will have to invest a lot of time in the education of your dog. With a few weeks of vacation when the puppy comes home you are not there. What the behavior of your future dog stands or falls with is the upbringing you will give. Every Bordeaux Dog, male or female, needs a friendly, consistent upbringing. It must be clear that you are the one who determines what happens and not the dog. Your dog will feel comfortable when you speak "understandable" (dog) language to him or her and show behavior that is understandable to the dog.

A male or a female?

Whether it is best to take a dog or a female is a very personal choice. It is not possible to give you a ready-made answer to this question. Having a dog has both advantages and disadvantages and the same applies to having a bitch.

The skeleton of a Bordeaux Dog will experience a tremendous growth spurt in the first twelve months. You will therefore have to take this into account until the dog reaches this age. If you let your puppy grow up with great care and policy in the first year, the chance of a happy dog's life is greatest!

Some tips:

  • It is important that you follow the nutritional advice of the breeder when feeding the puppy.
  • In case of health problems always consult your veterinarian and inform the breeder.
  • Play and move moderately, but note that the puppy grows explosively the first year
  • Be clear from the first moment, not on the couch is not on the couch, sometimes sometimes sometimes a puppy does not understand.
  • Your puppy will be a real baby for the first time. That means he still needs a lot of rest. Of course he has to gain a lot of impressions for his social development, but be careful not to overload your dog.
  • Does the pup sleep, let him sleep, rest ensures a stable and balanced pup • Bordeaux Doggen are children's friends par excellence. Yet you (your) children must learn to use your puppy wisely. Puppies are vulnerable young animals, really just babies. Their skeleton is not yet developed and consists of cartilage and is therefore very vulnerable. Never let children drag with puppies.
  • Walk your dog yourself! A young dog should not be let out by children. Even if you think your children can handle that. Children often have no patience and drag young dogs along the sidewalk. If your puppy encounters other dogs, they don't know what to do. If your puppy is startled, they don't know how to respond properly. If your dog is attacked by another dog, your children will panic. In this way a young dog can sustain damage for its entire life.
  • It is highly recommended to use a bench. Pathetic? Well no! The puppy gets used quickly, especially if you make the bench attractive by only inserting the puppy when he is tired and having the puppy look for a few lumps in the bench before sleeping. It not only helps with the process of toilet training, it also gives the puppy the chance to sleep sufficiently in a safe environment. He cannot secretly shred your newspaper or ripple on the electric wires. In addition, the use of the bench confirms your “rank higher” position, because you determine when you sleep, play or walk.
  • When you go for a walk with the puppy, it is better to take several short walks per day than one long walk. You can keep in mind that you count 1 minute per walk for every week that the puppy is old, so an 8-week-old puppy may not be longer than 8 minutes per walk, etc.
  • A puppy does not know its own limits: you will have to protect it from an excess of movement.
  • Let your dog become acquainted with other dogs, but do not allow him to "romp" extensively with his four-legged friends.
  • Stairs, jumping in and out of the car, jumping on and off the couch, flying endlessly behind a ball, playing in heavy sand and on uneven ground are strongly discouraged.
  • If you have a slippery floor in the house, it is advisable to lay floor coverings there during the first year of life of your dog. Growing up on a slippery floor can cause irreparable damage!
  • Responsible nutrition is very important for the development of your puppy. Give the dog quality chunks from a good brand, specially formulated for fast-growing, large breeds. See nutrition
  • Make sure you do not overfeed your puppy; Being overweight hurts your dog's bone development. Look at your puppy / young dog. If you can still feel the ribs and the spaces in between, but cannot see the ribs, your dog is at a good weight.
  • It is very important that you follow a puppy course with your dog and a number of (!) Follow-up courses at a "Kynologists Club" recognized by the Raad van Beheer. You can find the addresses on www.kennelclub.nl. You will have a lifetime of pleasure from a well-behaved dog.
